ADIÓS MOSQUITO IN COSTA RICA

Costa Rica reported a historic drop in dengue cases during 2025, following the 2024 outbreak (according to data from Costa Rica's Ministry of Health), but the El Niño climate phenomenon could reverse that trend. Against this backdrop, the ADIÓS MOSQUITO campaign arrives in the country.

With SC Johnson's support, two initiatives were launched to strengthen prevention of diseases transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

On one hand, the Costa Rican Red Cross is bringing prevention efforts to different communities across the country, prioritizing the most vulnerable areas. On the other, a traveling exhibit will tour various National Parks in the country, coordinating visits with nearby educational institutions, organized by the National Parks Foundation.

The launch of the ADIÓS MOSQUITO campaign in Costa Rica took place on June 2, 2026, at the headquarters of the Costa Rican Red Cross, with the participation of authorities from the Costa Rican Red Cross, SC Johnson —which supports the campaign in various countries across the Latin American region— and Edupas, the organization coordinating the campaign.

Ahead of the campaign's launch, during 2025, materials were adapted to the local context and culture, and teams from both institutions were trained to carry out prevention activities as local nodes of the regional network.

Training multipliers

The initiative led by the Costa Rican Red Cross aims to build a network of social health multipliers, teachers, and community leaders who will replicate prevention content in their local areas.

The training sessions will be led by staff from the Youth Department of the Costa Rican Red Cross between mid-2026 and April 2027, with a goal of directly reaching more than 2,000 people.

Traveling educational exhibit in the National Parks

The second initiative involves setting up an educational exhibit, together with Costa Rica's National Parks Foundation, inaugurated on June 5 to mark World Environment Day at Poás Volcano. The ceremony was attended by local authorities and students from schools in the nearby town of Poasito, close to the National Park.

The exhibit offers interactive activities, games, and visual resources so that audiences of all ages can learn to eliminate breeding sites and prevent mosquito-borne diseases.
