REGIONAL SITUATION OF DENGUE ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL EPIDEMIOLOGICAL BULLETIN AND THE PAN AMERICAN HEALTH ORGANIZATION



REGIONAL SITUATION OF DENGUE IN THE AMERICAS



The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) have issued an Epidemiological Alert due to an increase in dengue cases in the Region of the Americas. According to this Report issued on 03/07/2024, between epidemiological weeks 1 and 8 of 2024, a total of 1,874,021 suspected cases of dengue were reported. This figure represents an increase of 249% compared to the same period in 2023 and 354% compared to the average in the last 5 years.




According to the Health Information Platform for the Americas (PLISA) of the Panamerican Health Organization, the epidemiological situation of dengue is presented in this way in each country:



BRAZIL: 1,563,504 cases of dengue were reported, three times the number of cases recorded in the same period in 2023.



BOLIVIA: 11,221 cases of dengue were registered, 81.93% less than what was reported in SE 08/2023.



PARAGUAY: 148,262 cases of dengue were reported, 24 times what was recorded for the same period in 2023.



PERÚ: 34,042 cases of dengue were reported, 118.56% more than the cases reported until that week in 2023.




DENGUE SEROTYPES IN THE AMERICAS

In relation to the dengue serotypes, Paraguay and Bolivia register circulation of DEN 1 and DEN 2. Peru reports circulation of the serotypes DEN 1, DEN 2 and DEN 3. Brazil, for its part, presents circulation of the 4 serotypes, including DEN 4.



Likewise, the four mentioned countries presented a decrease in cases of chikungunya fever compared to 2023.





DENGUE SITUATION IN ARGENTINA



According to the latest epidemiological report, from the end of 2023 to week 8 of 2023, 95,705 cases of dengue have been registered in Argentina: 87,318 without travel background (native cases), 3,468 imported and 4,919 still under investigation.



During the first months of 2024, 78,606 cases of dengue have already been reported. For the same period in 2023, 4,317 cases had been registered.




Currently 19 jurisdictions present viral notified circulation in its territory. The persistence of cases stands out throughout the period analyzed, including the winter season and the sustained increase in the number of cases. The most affected regions in Argentina are: Central Region, NEA, and NOA. Below we share numbers of the cases reported during the 2023/2024 season (SE 31/23 to SE 9), clarifying that dengue cases continue to increase week after week.





CENTER REGION (Buenos Aires, CABA, Córdoba, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe): 74,327 cases of dengue were registered.



NEA REGION (Chaco, Corrientes, Formosa, Misiones): 64,496 confirmed cases of dengue.



NOA REGION (Catamarca, Jujuy, La Rioja, Salta, Santiago del Estero, Tucumán): 27,201 cases of dengue virus.



In Argentina 3 serotypes have been identified circulating in the country up to date: DEN-1, DEN-2 and DEN-3, with the predominance of DEN-2 followed by DEN-1.


Although cases of dengue were recorded in all age groups, the cumulative incidence is higher among 15-64 age range than in the general population.
